I'm strongly considering it.

Lots of "Smart Trainer" power on the leaderboard. Don't make me go Kickr you guys will be toast.

Power meter + smart trainer is the way to do it.

Yup. I can easily get +50watts by gaming the “smart trainer” calibration.

I started with my power meter configured as the power source but I found that the system had a very hard time controlling power in erg mode (this was in a group workout) presumably because Zwift is part of the control loop in that case. With the trainer as power source, Zwift is just sending setpoints and the feedback loop is contained entirely within the trainer, making the system much more responsive. This is speculation based on how I would have designed it. I'm not sure how in works when you're not doing a workout. Maybe Zwift is just sending setpoints to the trainer in "sim" mode and it doesn't need to make corrections to that based on the power meter output. I've been collecting data from my power meter using Garmin and putting that on Strava instead of sending data from Zwift. That's just being picky though; the trainer is new and it generally matches the power meter well.

Or just subtract a few kg from the weight you entered into Zwift.

I will say that the Elite Qubo trainer that Mark B and I have has a calibration program that requires you to use a power meter. It has you do 3 different power situations flat, med climb, hard climb. It uses your power meter readings to create a power curve that is then used throughout your riding and used for it's own power output sensor back to Zwift. Pretty slick, but very dependent on having an accurate power meter that is compatible with its software.
