MRCCOVID-19TTV2 - Challenge through MAY 31st! - SkinnyPhat TT Edition
MRCCOVID-19TTV2 - Challenge through MAY 31st! - SkinnyPhat TT Edition
I'd like to say thank you to the Pirate John Raguin for "suggesting" an entertaining TT challenge during this dark and rainy pandemic season (oh and also for the free beer!!!). Its safe to say we'll probably be without competitive racing (outside at least) for the near future, so to keep the fun going we'll do part 2 of the TT challenge, this time on the vaunted Skinnyphat TT course.
Let me preface the challenge by saying these things:
1) This is not sponsored by Minuteman Road Club or Jeremy Cratty (aka DJ Skinnyphat) in any way shape or form
2) If you ride this strava segment, you assume all liability and MRC and/or Jeremy Cratty (aka DJ Skinnyphat) are not liable for any injuries or damages you cause or incur. Basically, you are on your own. And since this is not an MRC sponsored event or group ride, you will not be eligible to receive USAC insurance benefits via the MRC policy.
3) In light of the current pandemic situation, please practice social distancing. Bonus if you wear an MRC buff, which performed well in recent wind tunnel testing.
The Segment: https://www.strava.com/segments/16034094
Yes people laugh at me every time I take the KoM from myself. Unlike the CBTT, the winner of this challenge will also have a prestigious crown at the end.
Course notes: This is more technical and with a bit more climbing than CBTT. Its not a pure power course, better bike handlers will be rewarded. Its pretty safe, with very little traffic. There is 1 left hand turn through a yield (or stop) sign coming off of Farm Rd that will require caution, but the sight lines are good and you can generally send it (but please be careful). This course is in FMR/WNR territory so its centrally located for most of the club (but not so much for the city dwellers). If you need to park nearby, use the country store at the route 117 exit off 495, the Berlin PnR or WNR plaza/110 Grill.
The Rules: Same Rules as before, no TT bikes or TT/extension bars, and no TT specific helmets. Obviously, no drafting. Anything considered Road Aero is acceptable. And to be clear, flying starts are allowed, just note you will be turning when you do so, please use caution. Always yield to cars/pedestrians, this is a fun TT but not life and death. Lastly, post up here your time to make it official.
The reward:
1. Beat me and you will win a pair of MRC socks.
2. There will be one overall winner (age be damned), which should be easy, they will most likely have the KoM! And the Grand Prize…………………… a new MRC Director’s Jacket. I have one, they are sweet!!
Reminder this is not MRC sponsored. Good luck!

Re: MRCCOVID-19TTV2 - Challenge through MAY 31st! - SkinnyPhat TT Edition
Ooo...this one's in my hood...air density is looking favorable this weekend!!
Re: MRCCOVID-19TTV2 - Challenge through MAY 31st! - SkinnyPhat TT Edition
Good air temps, but low humidity. Strangely humid air is less dense (suffer more but go faster).
The trick, William Potter, is not minding that it hurts.
Re: MRCCOVID-19TTV2 - Challenge through MAY 31st! - SkinnyPhat TT Edition
And so much easier for me to ride to and from for some recon.
Planning a weekend ride with the only cycling partner I've had for a bit (ya know, household member social distancing exception). Perhaps a QOM will be added...

There went my incentive to do this.
Re: MRCCOVID-19TTV2 - Challenge through MAY 31st! - SkinnyPhat TT Edition
Went out in the wind today. 25:01.
My computer never initially registered the segment and my lap time showed 24:45 (same watts) but the official on Strava is 25:01.
Few areas where I know I can keep the power up (and not slow as much at intersections) plus should be able to push another 15-20 watts. I think 24:30 is hard but realistic.

Nice Dave.
I scoped out the route yesterday and ear-marked some spots where I can pull over and chunder without offending the residents!

Yes, I’m not used it approaching Walnut from the north.

Re: MRCCOVID-19TTV2 - Challenge through MAY 31st! - SkinnyPhat TT Edition
And add to that a WSW wind for a favorable finishing wind.
Now if not for those pesky scattered t-storms (with some potentially strong) in the forecast...

Re: MRCCOVID-19TTV2 - Challenge through MAY 31st! - SkinnyPhat TT Edition
Laid down attempt #1 tonight
25:55
Wind SSW 7 mph | Humidity 26% | 64˚F | 30.1 inHg
Ran the reactor a little hot on the middle third of the course and couldn't finish as hard as I'd wanted. I think getting the climbs right is critical and I that's where some time could be clawed back...either that or I need to find a short cut! My target was mid 25's...perhaps my new kit isn't as fast as I'd indicated!!
They were doing some utility work on the telegraph poles on Walnut so look out for that if you venture out tomorrow (assuming they didn't finish).

I really need a power meter too...hard to regulate the effort just on feel! Although the amount of time I spent on the rivet would probably be a decent indicator!!
Re: MRCCOVID-19TTV2 - Challenge through MAY 31st! - SkinnyPhat TT Edition
Solid time Ian. I probably should do it soon or I'm going to owe people a lot of socks.
