PJ definitely found a better hill for this challenge. Although Chris' math had only 10%, with the much higher speed (36 mph) it was probably 15% of the energy (16.1m/s). I do think that the conservation of personal energy by not expending it in the run up has to be important and am not sure where that shows in the calculation. In the 20 seconds/10 seconds before the hill, I averaged 302w/336w respectively. Not super taxing, but definitely had an effect. By contrast, PJ averaged 65w/130w respectively.
It did get me thinking, what was the 1 minute power number order (to make myself feel better). Of course it doesn't factor in that AJ must be a heck of a lot lighter than the rest of us!
1. Pare - 680w (wow)
2. Rees - 626w
3. Raguin - 621w
4. Cratty - 604w
5. Cole - 589w
6. Westberry - 585w
6. McQuade - 572w (pretty damn good for young Dad legs!)
7. Lipcon - 548w
8. Massey - 527w
9. Mingori - 525w
10. Piper - 457w
I'm curious, where did you get those numbers?
I'm new to the watts conversation and I only know what my meter tells me and it had an average for that minute that doesn't match what's in your post.
I just clicked on the Strava link that you had for your segment. Then I scrolled down to Speed Power Cadence Temperature. On the Power line, it says "Avg 589"
Also if you are a premium Strava member they give you a curve for the ride that shows your max average power at every duration. You can check your one minute max power but if you were like me you’re one minute max power minute precedes your fastest vertical minute because there is some time required to accelerate up to speed. Strava says my one minute max power was 710 watts but it came about five seconds shifted earlier than the highest one minute vertical gain
What a sickeningly fun challenge. Struggled all week to put in a good effort but couldn't break 100'. Lack of steep climbs, limited time to find something sufficiently steep and the realization that if I did it wouldn't be worth it drove me to a local climb I've trained on for years. Hit it at the end of a ride yesterday and got 98'. Pissed and deflated decided to give it a go early in my ride this morning with the goal of cracking 100'.
Made it with a little room to spare.
113' minus the cat.3 = 108 plus the geriatric bonus (59 in 3 days) = 116 https://www.strava.com/activities/36148 ... is/388/427

Probably should have targeted this hill and rested going into it. Had a gearing mishap about 30s in, so potentially a few feet better with some planning and better shifting.
Huh ya it looks like for my best 1min elevation gain I did only avg 450ish but for the Menotomy segment I did 535ish for 1:07. So I think my best minute of elev gain included the last 15sec or so when I coasted across Gray st and kept climbing for like 8 seconds with no gas at all and didnt include the first bit where I did 700w getting up to speed at the base.
This was fun guys! I was working 12h shifts all week and sure you guys would bump me down enough that I’d have to get back out to School St at like 5a for one more effort. Then PJ took the flier yesterday coming within like 1 foot! It was a total nail biter.
Great job Rees, Cratty and John for putting this series together - definitely helped make social distancing doable.
Final results! Thanks for everyone who participated, I had a lot of fun with the conversations here and I had fun for the first 40 seconds of my attempts.
For the top 3, DM me and we can figure out a way to pay out your prize money Venmo or PayPal are both good options for me.
Also, if anyone knows how to get this to look more like an excel sheet, let me know. The spacing is horrid.

Put this in the “Least surprising thing ever” category - Rees makes a rule that only helps 1 person and said person wins challenge.
Still fun though, thanks for putting it together Rees!
Yes, I do regret making that rule, but Pare still would have won without it.

On the chance that we have this challenge again, I would change/add a few things.
1) Get rid of the "Pare clause" he didn't need it lol.
2) Almost everyone who entered was a Cat 3, I think I would add an extra foot between categories and separate the cat 4/5 group to encourage non-racers.
3) As well as not being able to use the hill of someone else, you also wouldn't be allowed to repeat the top 3 results from this year.
4) I would consider the "dad/mom leg bonus"
5) Because there were no female attempts, I would add a few more bonus feet there as well.

Off season, boredom-driven thinking...
I lost a totally unrelated kom recently but it got me thinking about the numbers on this challenge. I thought it would take forever to find this thread, so I just went back to my activity on strava and played around to once again find my best minute. Then I found this thread. I apparently didn't even post my best minute back in June.
