MRCCOVID-19TT Challenge through April 30th!

Post by jraguin »

OK guys. We all know it is unclear when we will get racing again. So I think we need some motivation. And I want to do my part to drive some motivation (and participation).

So, I am bringing back the TT challenge and calling it the MRCCOVID-19TT Challenge! Yes we care about social distancing so this is the perfect challenge!

The course:
The Charlie Baker TT course in Concord MA: https://www.strava.com/segments/2142660?filter=overall
(If our current semi-lockdown state goes longer than April 30th then I might add a second segment. It might be our actual MRC RR course!)

How to win:
Two different age groups done by USAC road racing age. 45+ and Under 45
You may say, oh, there are some fast guys in the club, I don’t know if I have a chance to win. But oh yes, you do!
* If you are under 45 and you beat my best time from this year by 30s or more, YOU WIN!
* If you are 45+ and you beat my best time from this year, YOU WIN!
My time last year was 24:20 (not that great honestly). I hope to beat it this year but we will see.
Of course, you must be a current MRC member with paid dues.

What you win:
A 6-pack of Wachusett beer.
If you don’t drink alcohol, you get a 4 pack of kombucha (yes, kombucha is more expensive than beer).
In both cases, you can request a certain type of Wachusett or kombucha after you win, no guarantees I will get that though.

The Rules:
NOT ALLOWED: TT Helmet, Aero/TT/Tri/Clip On Bars, disc wheels, drafting
Allowed: Aero-road gear, Aero helmet, skin suit, shoe covers (obviously)

How do you do it:
1) Crush the course (solo of course, no drafting)
2) Post your Strava times on here with the title MRCCOVID-19TT (because our President Cratty loves acronyms)
3) Repeat as necessary until you are sick of time trialing

Note that I WANT to pay out, so we may organize a ride or two that include the ride and time trialing the course at ~30 second intervals apart.

Zwift has too many ways that people cheat, even unknowingly. So I am not a big fan of it, but I will think about it.

I've been wanting to race when we can't race, but now we can race. Saturday has a high of 53.

Time trial rules are perfect for social distancing: 30sec time gap starts. If you come within 2 bike lengths of rider in front of you, you must either complete a pass or fall back.

First lap was just supposed to be a recon but I ended up gassing it only to find myself stuck at a lane closure due to tree work. Second lap I just kept up the pace since I was already a little tired but the lane closure was gone.

I did it today, I took a wrong turn though, so I don’t have an official result, but let’s just assume I did it in 24:35.

30-35 watts less, shorter than what I did the first time and I didn’t try to contort my body to get more aero (did it all on the hoods)

So yes, 23:49 was me going easier.

Is it ironic that 23:49 is 1 sec faster than the 24:20 minus 30 seconds? So I have to beat my last year's time not to pay you in Kumbucha!

I did notice that, good luck beating last years time by 2 seconds!

First attempt today. Tough headwind on the way out. 24:28. Chilly too...my feet were cold before the start. I know I can do a lot better.
