2018 Vermont Overland Registration opens New Years Day

Post by cbusick » Wed Dec 27, 2017 10:30 am

Registration for the 2018 VO opens on New Years day at 10AM. The race is Sunday, August 26th, 2018
They are reducing registration from 750->500 people this year.
This was one of my favorite events last year, significantly cheaper than D2R2 and in my mind, better since it is a mass start race instead of the casual "start when you want, do whatever" attitude of D2R2.
To quote Patrick Collins: "It was HARD"

From the Vermont Overland:

So set your phones for New Years Day at 10 am and get yourself a golden ticket to the new, improved and sustainably soulful Overland bike race: https://www.vermontoverland.com/overland

NOTE NEW VENUE AND COURSE: The Overland is all about soul. We found at our previous venue that things were becoming a little institutionalized, which is inevitable when events grow larger. We decided to go in the opposite direction. 500 riders max at a truly rural, home-grown venue (my house). Be one of the lucky riders to experience our amazing new course with now eight Pavé Sectors, eye-popping vistas, two covered bridges and 6,000 feet of climbing. When you finish the race, come and claim your free first beer, take a dip in the pool and grab yourself some chow from our awesome farm-table food trucks. Your biggest problem will be you won't want to go home!

Planning on it. Missed the boat last year.

Also note that registrations can be freely transferred for no fee.

It sold out already?
I gotta tell you I think all these gravel events are gonna kill off the GMSR!

What kind of gearing is recommended for that ride? My current CX bike is 36/46 (double) w 12-28 cassette. I am thinking with that much climbing the 36 x 28 isn't enough and you would want almost 1:1 ratio? So change the front ring to a 34 and go 34 x 32?

My new bike will be a 1 x 11, not sure how that gearing would fare on a ride with that much climbing?

I did it last year on a 40T with a 10-42 cassette.
There were a couple mountain bike like climbs where I would have liked something easier, but most people were walking at that point anyway because it was a fairly technical climb.

So basically you need 1:1 gearing for the climbs
