Franklinkill 2.0 -- Sunday 2/23 10am

Post by pace21 »

Franklinkill 2.0 -- The sequel, this time with no crashes and a higher base tempo speed. Same format, we'll go full gas on the defined "segments" and then regroup. A few notes:

I won't be running sweep this time as I'm going to try to stay near the front, so if you don't know the route by heart then definitely put it on a Garmin so you don't get lost on the segments when it breaks up

The base tempo will be higher than it was in January, let's say 0.5-1mph overall faster average speed. If you're questioning your fitness you may want to sit this one out. The hills are relentless.

I'll post the final route here soon but it will be largely the same with some key tweaks. I'll probably add some distance to avoid a crappy road we faced toward the end of the ride last time. Figure 65 miles and a leg crushing amount of punchy climbing. Start/end at my place, if you don't know where that is then text or DM me.

Will there be a definite refuel stop, or will we again rely on the locals? ;)

This is the primary reason I say "I won't be sweeping but I'll be staying with the front group" -- yes there will be a refuel stop and hopefully we don't blow by it ;)

@KT -- hopefully :oops:

Here it is: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31971973

Notables
- Removed some of the "fun" (i.e. tight, twisty, rollercoaster-y) roads and added in some numbered roads (boo!) in an attempt to keep people from crashing
- Two separate sections of bike path. Both are normally quite enjoyable and better options to avoid some busy roads. With the forecasted 50 degree temps there might be 1,000 walkers so let's be good citizens
- Five segments: Tower Hill Rd (mile 11.7), Cullen Hill Rd (mile 22.4), Wilbur Wall/Road (mile 24), Capron Road (mile 28), and then the "extended TTT/race segment" which starts at mile 30 and ends at mile 36. From there we roll into Burrillville for a refuel at mile 40.5 and the hostilities are essentially over at that point. The long stretch of 98 after the refuel should be good for rolling tempo.

Ian - in January on a route that was 5 miles longer and more climbing and including stops for crashes it wasn't that much over 4 hours back to the house.

I pulled the A-bike off the trainer. It hasn’t seen pavement in months. 💥💥💥

I was considering new bike day, but I think I'll pass for now.
