Rose 32 ride - Sunday 2/16 @ 10 AM fr. OSC

Planning a ride to the Rose 32 Bread in Hardwick. As of now thinking start from the Old Stone Church in W. Boylston @ 10 AM. Start time & location could be adjusted based upon interest. Route to follow but usual is about 100 KM and 3.5 - 4 hours moving. Ride to the Rose, stop for ~30 minutes for coffee and pastry, ride back.

For those of you not familiar with the Rose their coffee and pastry is SECOND TO NONE 😋 (and good sandwiches for lunch)

Who's interested?

How would you compare it to cafe Nora?

You returning the easy way or the not-so-easy way ;)

Can you post the route. I'm not familiar with it.

here's the route: https://www.strava.com/routes/23887970

The pace will be uneven with the hills, but figure an average pace of 17 mph for the ride.

FYI, on the return trip you'll want to reroute this. From 86K (will you just put this in miles..) I don't think you'll be able to get thru on Prospect St without some serious CX tires. And Irish Ln/Emerald is dirt almost to Rt.56. And then Emerald St after crossing Rt.56 (91K) is now blocked off with a jersey barrier. That road will definitely not be passable over to Hillside on even 28 road tires.
And even if it's passable, it will still be icy and quite wet on Sunday.

Thanks Dave. I wasn't sure about what those roads were all about. I just wanted to avoid staying on rt. 31 for too long. Not that 31 is bad, but just because.

Better way to avoid 31 is continue on Pleasantdale to122a. If you want to skip Rutland ctr, bang a right on Kenwood then follow it to the left over to 56. Left on 56, right on Prescott. Then you can come down Causeway onto 122a just by Wachusett Regional or left towards Bond and onto 122 further up.
Just keep in mind out this way received noticeably more ice and slushy snow past 7-10 days. Side roads are a mess.

Here's the revised route. We've taken similar routes through W. & N. Brookfield in the past, but it's been a long time. So it's about time.

FYI: The original route linked earlier has been revised per Dave's recommendation. But I'm going with this one. Distance and elevation are nearly equal.

Overall you will be much better off with this route. Damn, either way you've got plenty of climbing!
Few comments on the v1.1 route:

1) The climb onto Lyon/Ragged Hill almost immediately after leaving Rose is a BITCH. That's all, just be ready for it! That road, and down to Wickaboag Valley is winding and undulating so just give space on the descents, especially given winter road conditions.

2) If I remember correctly, parts of Wickaboag Valley Rd (miles 37-40'sh) were quite rough in spots this summer so just keep alert. Same goes for Hillsville Rd descent (although not as bad) - mile 49-50'sh so use caution. Then be real careful after turning onto Paxton Rd off Wire Village (mile 56'sh). Narrow road, short sharp descent into a semi-blind right bend (it's the "Upper Wire Village" section on the map). Just give space.

3) Unless you're familiar with it from prior rides, Old Dana Rd/Dana Rd (the cutover from 122 to 32A) may be questionable. Many of the roads out there turn to dirt and that area had significant icing last week. Just to be cautious, you may want to avoid the real side roads in that area. Safer bets would be to follow the KTOQ roads off 122 over to 32A (left onto Old Hardwick) but even those, while "paved" may be in pretty rough shape. Safest bet unless you know the road conditions would be to cut some distance (and climbing) and take South Rd out of Barre center up past Quabbin Regional and then down to the usual drag of 32. South Rd will definitely be in decent condition since it's right past a high school. That one's up to you but I know what I'd choose for this time of year.

My plans will still be a game time decision based on temps. Might see you out there on the return stretch.

Thanks Dave. We've done the Old Dana route to 32A before. It's normally good. And Lyon/Ragged Hill too, but we usually turn left onto Wickaboag. I believe it was repaved, but not sure how far in that direction.

In the name of safety (and prefeuling on delicious pastry 😋) I'm going to recon some of the roads - in my car.

I reconnoitered the route today in my car. And although 99.9% of Old Dana Rd. is perfectly fine there was one small piece (~15' in length; that's about 5 M 🙂) that was icy. It was on a downhill section right where Old Dana meets Dana. I didn't want to see Tiago kill himself super-tucking 😉, so I decided to use the KTotQ route to 32A instead using Old Hardwick Rd.. If 99.9% of Old Dana was fine then this should be 100%. The rest of the route was A-O-K 👍.

Here's the new route: https://www.strava.com/routes/23908357

Going to be a good day on the bike 👍🙂

BTW: so far looks like we've got Fintan, Zim (Steve Zimei), T (Tiago D.), and Katie K. 'in'; Dave M. meeting en-route post Rose 32; maybe Doug A.

And your's truly.

Oh, and the new route is a little shorter and a little less climbing.

Will do my best to meet up hoping for W.Brookfield, otherwise maybe N.Brookfield.
Your shortened route to Rose is going to make me push things a bit more. Or I could cut some distance, but what fun would that be??
Text me when you arrive and leave Rose.
