Sunday elite race -- a classic

Post by Bruce »

Fantastic race. The sun actually came out and the course was riding more like a fast crit with a few tricks thrown in. Unbeleivable because at 7AM even the transitional areas were thick with mud.

Anyway, on the first lap Jonathan Page emerged with JPOW, soon joined by teammate Tim Johnson. The two had to give it everything just to stay with Page, who was riding full out. The decisive point in the race came when, over the space of 2 laps, Jamie Driscoll bridged up making it 3 guys from cyclocrossworld.com. They started attacking Page, but still the attacks were weak because Page was simply pushing too high a pace. Then with a few laps to go, Page fell going into the sandpit. He was down for only like a nanosecond, but TJ was leading through the sand and he took off like a bat out of hell...........RIDING WITH A SEPARATED SHOULDER!! Within a minute he put 18 seconds into Page. Page was behind JPOW and Driscoll coming out of the sand and, while they were good sports and let him by on the following straightaway, they did impede his chase just enough. TJ took it from there and built a 45 second lead. Almost as amazing as TJ's performance was the fact that Page was able to duel for second place.

Page might need to put some teammates around him; this was a great example of how cross can be a team sport. Few sports are as exciting a cross when you get a venue and a race like that. Next week will be interesting.
