Garmin Varia.

I'm constantly surprised at how few people have these. If you have a compatible head unit then I would highly reccommend this:

I've been tempted in the past, but never pulled the trigger. I got tempted again earlier today by the email from Garmin saying $70 off. Still haven't pulled the trigger :)

Ok I'm looking at a phone with a crack in the screen but still...
I've watched the video several times now and I'm still not seeing it. What is the on-screen indication of an approaching car?

It's a series of color-coded dots on either side (your choice) of the Garmin.

How do you respond to that information? Does it make you safer?

That was the reason I hadn't pulled the trigger. But the people that have them seem to think they're great; including GP Lama in his review I linked to.

You see not only the car behind you, but the multiple cars behind that one. I find it is less the first car that surprises you than the second.
Secondly, when you have head-on traffic it is impossible to hear a car behind you.
I take take the dot as confirmation a car is behind me and it guides me; I do not take the lack of a dot as conformation there is no car.
The radar used Doppler effect, so that car that is stalking you, afraid to pass, may not show (you typically know it is there as you saw the dot as it approached).
In summary it is defiantly safer; it’s like having someone with you yelling “car back” on your solo rides.
It’s an “oh crap” moment when I realize I forgot, or did not charge, mine.

Example:
I’m heading for a crappy patch to the side of the road:
Varia shows car behind; I keep looking forward and navigate the crap. (Varia saves me taking my eyes off the road as the road turns crappy)
Varia shows no cars behind; quick look back to confirm and swing out and around the crap.

Makes sense. Thanks.
